When applied correctly, foundation should cover blemishes, even out skin tones and provide a long lasting base for makeup.
Foundations are available in many colors and types: liquid (light coverage), emollient (heavier, good for beard and tattoo coverage), and cake (pressed powder with medium to light coverage). Eye foundations (concealer) are formulated to even-out sensitive eye skin tones such as dark circles and aid longevity of under eye eye shadow makeup.
In this section we will be using a high opacity foundation because it's easier to apply and needs to provide better coverage than everyday foundations. Foundation only needs to be applied where it's necessary; beard area only if your skin appears youthful with no blemishes and is even toned. Less is always best!
It is assumed that you have already prepared your face ready for makeup; shaved, clean, toned and moistorized. |

Before we start it's very important to match your foundation color to your skin tone. This can be done either in-store with the help of a beauty professional or by purchasing a test palette such as the DermaColor Mini Palette which contains 16 colors. Patch test the palette colors to you skin tone, mid cheek away from the beard area. Once the correct tone is found a larger pot can be ordered. It is possible that the ideal tone is between 2 of the palette shades, in which case that tint might exist or use 2 tones blended. Always check your foundation colors against skin tone in daylight since Tungsten and Halogen lamps give a yellow hue.
(1) Foundation - Load a little foundation (DermaColor Camouflage Creme) onto a cosmetic sponge, or preferably a foundation brush (eg MAC 190 Foundation brush), and apply to the beard area from the center working outwards to the hairline using a stippling action. Depending on skin, it might not be necessary to cover your whole face. Do not apply too much in one application. Don't forget the neck area..
(2) Blend - Using the clean end of the sponge, blend the foundation so that the application looks smooth and no edges are visible. For neck foundation, blend downwards to the shoulders.
(3) Fix - Using a fixing powder, load up a powder brush or compact powder puff with DermaColor fixing Powder. This will absorb any excess grease and fix the foundation. It will even become waterproof. Let it set for 5 minutes. If any darkness is still showing, repeat steps 1 to 3.
(4) Pro Look - For a professional and really long lasting look, use one application of DermaColor and fix, leave to set, then apply a little MAC full Coverage foundation, preferably with brush using a stippling action and set with a fix or blot powder.
Notes.
If the under eye area is quite dark, you might consider applying a lighter concealer and blend well into the face foundation.
In rare cases, one application of foundation might not be sufficient to cover all dark areas. In which case apply another coat of foundation after the first one is fixed. Do not apply one heavy coat.
The look that you now have should be consistent but quite flat with no dark areas. In the next section, Face shapes, you will see where shading, highlight and blush should be applied to enhance your face shape.
